Disable Changing Proxy Settings

Configure and enable the proxy settings:





  • In the Group Policy window, in the left pane:
    • Select Windows Settings
    • Select Internet Explorer Maintenance
    • Select Connection.

  • In the right pane:
    • Double-click on Proxy Settings.
    • Check the enable proxy settings box to enable the proxy.
    • Uncheck the Use the same proxy server for all protocols box.

  • In rows 1. HTTP, 2. Secure and 3. FTP:
    • In the Address of proxy and Port fields, enter the details included in your provisioning documentation.
    • Ensure that the Gopher, and Socks boxes are empty.
    • Under Exceptions, ensure that the Do not use proxy server for local (intranet) addresses box is checked.
    • If there are any other IP addresses that need to bypass the proxy server for some reason (e.g. an Extranet site), detail them in the box.

  • Click OK.




  • Secure the proxy settings:

  • When the proxy settings have been enabled, disable the option for users to change the proxy settings
    1. In the Group Policy window, in the left pane:
      • Select User Configuration
      • Select Administrative Templates
      • Select Internet Explorer
    2. In the right pane, scroll down to Disable changing proxy settings and right-click on it.
    3. Select Properties.

    4. Select the Enabled button.
    5. Click on Apply, then OK.

    Now any users to whom the Group Policy is applied will be prevented from changing their proxy settings.

    test vpn bandwidth and speed with iperf

    This article explains how to use a free utility called iPerf to test the speed of a VPN connection. In this example I am running iPerf on windows but there are other versions available (i.e. Linux). Download iPerf from  http://linhost.info/2010/02/iperf-on-windows/ Put a copy on 2 computers with 1 either side of the VPN. In this example I have put in the c:\triangle folder On the “server” PC open a cmd prompt and navigate to the folder containing iperf. Note on computers running Win7 or Win2008 I recommend running the cmd prompt in elevated mode. Run the command  iperf –s On the “client” PC open a cmd prompt and again navigate to the folder containing iperf. Run the command  iperf –c After a short while the estimated bandwidth is displayed.

    Installing the East-Asian language packs
