How to Fix: the virtual machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running

Recently I have prepared a windows server 2008 Operating System in Dell machine and configured the hyper-v role. When I am trying to start a virtual machine from a physical host it prompted “the virtual machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running” error. So I’ve completed a little research and following are the steps to get to the bottom of the Hyper – v problem.
  • Open command prompt with run as administrator and run below command. This should put the Hyper-V driver back into the launch procedure                                                                                                                bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto
  • Reboot the server and hit F9 to enter the Bios.
  • Go to Advanced options > Processor Options
  • Find the “No-Execute Memory Protection” and enable it. (Hit enter)
  • Find the “Intel(R) Virtualization Technology” and enable it. (Hit enter)
  • DEP enabled in BIOS
  • Security > Execute Disable (set to On)
  • Performance > Virtualization (set to On)
  • Performance > VT for Direct I/O Access (set to On)
  • Performance > Trusted Execution (set to Off)
  • Save and exit using F10
dell hyper-v
Now you can able to start the Virtual machine normally. Please comment if you face still issue.
Note: If you run Windows 8 or Windows server 2012 virtual machines in windows server 2008 or Windows server 2008 R2, you can see below issues.
  • The virtual machine stops responding
  • You receive a Stop error message, and the computer restarts. This behavior stops all running virtual machines together with the computer.
The issue occurs because the Hypervisor does not handle the one-shot synthetic timer correctly.
So to resolve this issue you need to run below the update
Download update from here for Windows server 2008
Download update from here for Windows server 2008 R2

test vpn bandwidth and speed with iperf

This article explains how to use a free utility called iPerf to test the speed of a VPN connection. In this example I am running iPerf on windows but there are other versions available (i.e. Linux). Download iPerf from  http://linhost.info/2010/02/iperf-on-windows/ Put a copy on 2 computers with 1 either side of the VPN. In this example I have put in the c:\triangle folder On the “server” PC open a cmd prompt and navigate to the folder containing iperf. Note on computers running Win7 or Win2008 I recommend running the cmd prompt in elevated mode. Run the command  iperf –s On the “client” PC open a cmd prompt and again navigate to the folder containing iperf. Run the command  iperf –c After a short while the estimated bandwidth is displayed.
